Caipirinha

The Caipirinha is Brazil’s nation cocktail and consists of sugar cane rum (Cachaça), sugar, and lime. Cachaça results from the fermentation of sugarcane juice with is afterwards distilled. The word caipirinha is the diminutive version of the word caipira which refers to someone from the countryside. In American English, the equivalent would be ‘hillbilly’. When referring to this drink, the word (which can usually be used as either masculine or feminine) is always feminine. The word caipirinha is associated mostly with the drink rather than the class of person in Brazilian vocabulary nowadays. There are many variations of the caipirinha. The Caipiroska is the exact same except for the cachaça is substituted by vodka. The Caipiroska Negra is made with black vodka instead of cachaça, the caipirissima is made with rum instead of cachaça, and the caipirItaly is made using campari instead of cachaça. The Sakerinha is made with sake instead of cachaça and the caipirão is made using the Portuguese liqueur Licor Beirão instead of cachaça. Joys of Running

Every weekend without fail i go for a run. It’s a tradition that I have followed for about fifteen years when i made a new years resolution to take a run at least once a week. Since then a lot has changed, i can now run over six miles comfortably, albeit not as fast as I ran then. There was one point where i had to break my resolution for two months whilst i recovered from a broken bone in my foot. Apart from that i have been running every weekend for the fifteen years mentioned. In some ways it feels like a remarkable achievement to have such self-discipline to see it through, but it also feels a bit sad! Have i had nothing better to do at the weekend for the last fifteen years than run around a park or town?! Running is not my only weekend tradition though, i also make sure that every weekend i watch the lottery numbers saturday get drawn. This tradition does sometimes get broken though, if I’m going out with friends or family. In this case, it’s fine, i just use the link posted above to check whether or not I’ve won!
Strange deaths proliferate throughout history and there are ample examples pertaining to the 1940’s. Read on to hear about the unusual ways certain individuals met their end during the decade, it may induce you to go to www.sunlife50plan.co.uk and get life insurance! Marcus Garvey died in 1940 after suffering two strokes upon reading a premature obituary of himself. The following year, the writer Sherwood Anderson, died of peritonitis after swallowing a toothpick. In 1945, the scientist Harry K. Daghlian Junior dropped a brick of tungsten carbide onto a sphere of plutonium accidentally when working on the Manhattan Project. The plutonium came to criticality and Daghlian died of radiation poisoning. The same core that killed Daghlian also killed Louis Slotin the following year. After the screwdriver he was using slipped, the core went critical and the chemist died of radiation poisoning. The Collyer Brothers died in 1947 after Langley Collyer triggered one of his own booby traps at home. The large piles of books, newspapers, and objects crushed him to death and his paralyzed blind brother starved to death.

Candlelight

The light that is emanated from a candle is rather different from that emanated from a gu10 light bulb. The earliest recorded candle had been traced to China and the year 200BC, these early candles were produced from whale fat. China certainly beat Europe and the Middle East to the game as candles did not appear in either until after 400AD! In Europe, the early candle consisted of various forms of wax, tallow, and natural fat. A superior candle was introduced in the 18th century which was made from spermaceti, oil produced by the sperm whale. Spermaceti was rather expensive however and so in the late 18th century, candles made of rapeseed oil and colza oil came into use, being much more economical options. In 1830 paraffin was distilled which revolutionized candle-making as it was inexpensive and produced high-quality candles that were odourless and burnt well. The moment kerosene was distilled however, the candle-making industry was over.

Remodel

So there have been some rumours going around about DuBarry's, and while we tried to keep it all under our hat someone obviously couldn't contain their excitement and spilt the beans a bit earlier than planned.

So here you have it, official from us: we're remodeling the bar. Now don't go running in a blind panic, because we are going to do our best to stay open as long as possible by refurbishing different parts of the bar in stages. We're hoping to only have to close for literally a few days for the crossover.

But it'll be worth it, our architect has drawn up some stunning plans, and we're pulling out a bit of cash we've been investing in a Rowan Dartington investment fund, because we figure, what's a better investment than our own DuBarry's Bar?

So stick with us, we'll keep you all updated here and in the bar.
